A Closer Look at Google Gemini’s New Gems

On August 28th, 2024, Google announced new Custom Gems and improved image generation with Imagen 3.

Available to Gemini Advanced, Business and Enterprise subscribers, users can now start creating and chatting with Gems.

What is a Gem?

With Google Gemini in its current state you can login and start a new chat. You can tailor the chat to your liking and provide instructions – commonly referred to as prompts within the generative text ecosystem – to help you get the assistance you need whether it be writing an email draft or solving a programming roadblock you’ve encountered – well this is what we have been using it for – and it seems to do a pretty good job.

Gems take the above a step further.

A Gem allows you to create specific and repeatable instructions to follow, and each time you chat with your tailored Gem it will respond based on your predefined instructions and preferences.

Simply Put, if you are now able to store your preferences and goals then reuse them on the fly when you need it. To add to that you can have different Gems for your unique needs.

A few examples shared by Google include:

  • Workout requirements. Create a Gem that includes any physical limitations and time limits to make sure Gemini maximizes your time and provides suitable movements for each new workout.
  • Diet preferences. Create a Gem that has specific ingredients to include, or a diet to follow like vegan or high protein, every time you ask for a new recipe.
  • Gardening specifications. Create a Gem based on your garden’s climate and light exposure to get relevant ideas whenever you ask Gemini gardening questions.

Business as Usual

When you open up Google Gemini, you can navigate to Gem Manager where you will be greeted by 5 Premade Gems from Google which include: A Brainstormer, a Career Guide, a Coding Partner, a Learning Coach, and a Writing Editor.

Here we can also create our custom Gems starting from scratch or making a copy of one of those already premade by Google.

When creating a new Gem, you can give it a unique name and its own set of specific instructions. Then you can preview by testing prompts or use and come back later to change the instructions.

Think of all the tasks you do day-to-day or Month-to-month. Gems can be tailored to assist you do more. For example you could set up a gem to categorize and prioritize emails that you receive during the day.

Taking this a step further you can then ask the Gem to summarize what email threads are about and provide you with draft responses.

While you can already do the above in Gemini, a Gem allows you to come back whenever you want and do it again.

The same goes if you wanted to write social media captions for your Instagram profile, you could create a Gem tailored to how you would prefer and have it generate your captions repeatedly.

With multiple gems you are able to set up your own team of personalized chatbots and thus improve your workflows and get more done in less time.

Sam Altman, current CEO of OpenAI, the company behind one of the world’s leading generative AI chatbots: ChatGPT said in an interview that we would soon see the emergence of 10-person billion-dollar companies.

“We’re going to see 10-person companies with billion-dollar valuations pretty soon…in my little group chat with my tech CEO friends, there’s this betting pool for the first year there is a one-person billion-dollar company, which would’ve been unimaginable without AI. And now [it] will happen.” – Sam Altman, Cofounder, OpenAI

What he’s referring to is entire organizations being run by smaller teams with the assistance of AI and generative AI. Think of a company the size of Uber but internally run by just 10 people.

Gemini Gems is a step closer in this direction and companies which fail to see the use-case, while still limited in its ability to be 100% proficient, will fall behind those who do test and adopt new technologies.
